file and printersharing XP Pro

R

rel

Hello,

I was wondering if the `file & printersharing service" is used
for management or for any other needed applications, besides
just ordinary share resources.

I'am deploying some workstations for use in a NT4 domain
and was thinking of removing this service.

I am also planning to push anti-virus agents like
McAfee's ePo later on, I guess I will need this service
to do that. Because I won't be using any other
remote installation software.

I don't want users to see the hosts in ther browser
(network neighbourhood) either.

Anyway, my question.. Can this file and printsharing do any harm
within a network? And how can I hide the host in the browse list
while this service is installed and enabled.

greets, rel.

There are two levels to keep clear on here.
The service being installed, compared to its being used.
There are some parts of the service that you may want
to have available. This can be done by having it show
as installed (in the network adapter interface) but not
bound to that interface (checkbox cleared). In this state
it is not active on the network, but its subsystems are
installed and available for local (on the machine) calls.

You can set a reg entry of type Dword with value 1 that
has name Hidden, in HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\
Services\Lanmanserver\parameters (if I am recalling this
location correctly at the moment) and the machine will
then not advertise itself to browse lists.

With regard to the McAfee epo... The agent deployment to the client
can be done using a logon script that points to an agent install
package on the network. If however you want to deploy from within the
epo server console to your clients you may have problems. Check the
product documentation as there are a few other alternative ways to
install the agents.
