file access/no domain/different workgroups

winxp pro 2002
no domain
this is for pc's that have different workgroups

goal is to provide lan/network file access to only certain
username/passwords
such that when attempting access the user is prompted for username/pswd

can't find that setup when putting files in shared folder
so can files somehow be 'shared' when not specifically put in the
xp default shared folder and 'shared' with the above requirements

Disable Simple File Sharing.
