Workgroup sharing permissions

My problem is with sharing files on my workgroup. I am not on a domain. On
one computer i sare multiple files for use on my workgroup. What i am
wondering is how i can restrict access to some files. I know i can hide them
by puting $ after the share name but when i try to type in the
computername/username of the users on other computers in my workgroup it will
not show the location of those computers and/or add the users to the list. Do
i need to set up a domain to do this? (I have 4 computers in this Workgroup)

if you could please help with this it would be greatly appriciatied.

Tom,

The possibilities depend upon what operating system you have on each computer.
XP Home, or XP Pro with Simple (or Advanced) file sharing - all 3 give different
possibilities.

Provide more details about your network, and we can advise you more effectively.

Tom,

Try again please. XP Home will only run Simple File Sharing.

With XP Home in the mixture, you'll either run an unbalanced LAN, or you'll have
to go to Simple File Sharing (or Guest authentication anyway) on the XP Pro
computers.

Are all of the computers going to be sharing files (acting as a server)? If the
computer with XP Home is only a client, you'll have a much easier time.

Or do you maybe want to prevent some files from any network access at all?

The challenge will come if you have files to share, from XP Home, that you want
some people to access thru the network, and others to not access. Less picky
wants will make things progressively easier.

Try and define your needs very precisely, and I'll try and advise you. But a
bit more detail than "2 of the computers have xp pro with advanced file sharing
the other is a xp home with advanced file sharing", please. Read the articles.
