Field in footer not showing

I have a document template (.doc format) that our org uses. I have a style
called doc# defined, and it is supposed to show up in the footer. I inserted
a styleref field that is tied to that style, and nothing shows up in the
footer where the styleref feld is inserted. If I toggle field codes, the
code is here.
The document does have text formatted in the doc# style.

What could cause it to not show up?? All other fields in the header and
footer work fine. It's just this one that is being difficult.

This can sometimes happen if you have an empty paragraph formatted with the
nominated style. Use Find to search for the style and see if it stops
anywhere on the page before the instance you're expecting to see in the
footer.

I did a search like you suggested, but there are no other instances of the
style in the document.
