FIELD CODES AND TOC STYLES

Hi,

I have a long Word 2003 document redolent with field codes. When I amend the
standard TOC styles (both thru the Styles and Formatting pane and the Table
of Contents/Style dialog), regenerate the TOC and save the document, when I
reopen the document the styles have invariably reverted to the original
formatting.

Word does this every time. One way round it is to apply new Table of
Contents styles with different names and ensure they're not based on the
original TOC1, TOC2 and TOC3 styles. But this solution is inelegant because
it's based on a complete lack of understanding of why Word is reverting to
the original styles . . .

Does anyone know why Word does this, and how to stop it?

Thanks,

Just to clarify, are you using TOC styles for the headings in your document
or just for the TOC entries? You must use heading styles for the headings
and then build the TOC based on those styles.

FWIW, you cannot build an automatic TOC using any but the built-in TOC
styles, so it is a waste of time to create custom styles for that purpose.

If you are customizing the TOC styles in the document and not saving the
changes to the template, go to Tools | Templates and Add-ins and make sure
that "Automatically update document styles" is not checked for the document.

Hi,

I'm using heading styles for the headings, not the TOC styles.

Sorry, what I wrote wasn't fully clear. What I did was convert the TOC to
text (Ctrl+Shift+F9) and then apply the new styles. It worked but it's an
annoyingly longwinded solution.

I'll try unchecking "Automatically update document styles" and see if that
does the trick.

Thanks,

Also, make sure you are updating your TOC by just pressing F9, not by
reinserting it (which causes you to go back to Square One).
