Brand new Dell XPS 710 computer comes equipped with expansion slots. I put
the subject commercially available Creative Labs card in one. Legally, Dell
washes their hands of support responsibilities the instant the computer
morphs from the shape it was in when it left the factory. That's one
corporate entity that disclaims any responsibility. Next, Creative Labs has
no immediate customer support (e.g. telephonic or chat). However, one may
e-mail a complaint. That is what you will find in ALL CAPS below. I await a
reply. That's a second corporate entity that disclaims any responsibility.
Third, Dell sold me the card. I guess I was supposed to nail it to the wall
and admire its artistic beauty. As a sound card, so far, it's a zero.
That's two and one-half corporate entities disclaiming responsibility.
The odd thing is that Vista 64-bit all up version plus fixes (Evaluation
copy #6001) in cahoots with Creative Labs driver installer seem to be
extremely happy once the installation ends. I ran it As Administrator. Yet,
after the final reboot, the device has a yellow question mark next to it in
Device Manager.
I am dual booting the machine with XP. It, too, does not permit the device
driver to be properly installed. And, this time, I used the CD that came
with.
I visualize money down the drain.
Is there anyone else with a similar tale to tell?
THE DRIVER DELIVERED WITH THE PC CARD IS FOR 32-BIT OPERATING SYSTEMS. MY
OPERATING SYSTEM IS VISTA 64-BIT. I DOWNLOADED SBXF_PCDVT_LB_2_15_0004.EXE
FROM CREATIVE'S OWN WEB SITE. THE WEB SITE INDICATES THIS IS THE CORRECT
DRIVER FOR VISTA 64-BIT. I CLEANED OUT ALL CREATIVE SOFTWARE (DRIVERS,
PROGRAMS). I REBOOTED. I "RUN AS ADMINISTRATOR" EXECUTED THE ABOVE EXE
FILE, WHICH APPEARED TO COMPLETE WITHOUT INCIDENT. THE RESULT IS IN DEVICE
MANAGER. UNDER OTHER DEVICES CREATIVE SB X-FI APPEARS NEXT TO XEROX 6400.
