Jimbob

I currently have:

xp 3000+
Maxtor 60gig 7200
Abit KV7
1gig kingston
6600GT 128mb

Now, i bought a 150gig h/d the other week in preperation of some new bits:

Motherboard -

ASrock 939 Dual

http://www.microdirect.co.uk/ProductInfo.aspx?ProductID=10165

£44.59

CPU -

AMD Athlon 64 4000

http://www.ebuyer.com/customer/products/index.html?action=c2hvd19wcm9kdWN0X2
92ZXJ2aWV3&product_uid=88106

£233.54

Memory -

Kingston 1GB 266MHz

http://www.ebuyer.com/customer/products/index.html?rb=13980644852&action=c2h
vd19wcm9kdWN0X292ZXJ2aWV3&product_uid=28776

£105.30

Total: = £383.43

Now, i'm getting the m/board so i have the option of getting pci-e in the
future as i can't afford one at the moment, and my 6600GT is pretty sweet.
And maybe get another SATA drive in the future.

Just wondering if this is the right way to go?

If you want a mainboard that gives good performance with both AGP 8X and
PCI-E graphics cards, the Asrock is the only one I've seen on the market
(using the ULI M1695 chipset).

For the memory, though, you want PC3200 (DDR400), to match the CPU. (It may
be possible to set the BIOS to use slower RAM, but there'll be a performance
loss.) The CPU supports dual channel, so I suggest that, even though you
may not be running applications that benefit from it. 2X512k kit can be
easily had for less than $80 in the US; I hope that it's not that much worse
in the UK. (Two 512 kB sticks ought to cost less than a single 1 GB one,
regardless.)

I currently have 2*512k Kingston PC3200 (DDR400), but it's showing it's
running at 200mhz. If i get another 2 sticks of 512, but at 400mhz, will
this be ok?

And, for two sticks it would be around £60, so about the same as the US.

dawg

It's really running at 200. 200DDR(double data rate)= 400. It's all the
same,PC3200,DDR 400
