FBA Starts but Hangs

I am able to boot a fairly simple XPe image from compact flash, and FBA runs
to completion. However, when I add the following components:

Software\System\User Interface\Shells\Windows Shell\Add/Remove Programs
Control Panel
Software\System\User Interface\Shells\Windows Shell\Windows Accessories
Software\System\User Interface\Shells\Windows Shell\Date/Time Control Panel
Software\System\User Interface\Shells\Windows Shell\Keyboard & Mouse Control
Panel
Software\System\System Services\Base\Primitive: Dbghelp.dll
Software\System\System Services\Base\CMD - Windows Command Processor

.... to that same configuration in Target Designer, and I rebuild, (no
errors) then my XPe image makes it to the screen that says:

"First Boot Agent (FBA) is Starting..........",

....but it goes no further. (20 minutes later, the same screen is still
displayed.) No log file is created in the \windows\fba directory.

Does anybody have any idea why this happens?

Mike,
components you adds don't seem so critical to cause the FBA hangs. I guess
that the CF you are loading has a failure and makes the system to stop
without writing the log file.
Therefore my suggestion is to change the CF with a new one.
Moreover try to add only a few components to insulate the potential guilty.

Thanks Raffaele,

Chkdsk didn't find anything wrong with the compact flash. Chkdsk misses a
lot of problems, so I decided to repartition and reformat the card using the
Windows Disk Management facility. The card still refused to boot.

Next I ran Diskpart, and I did a "Clean" on the card before repartitioning.
(Then I had to reformat the card using the Windows Disk Management facility
since Diskpart doesn't format on XP Pro). That seems to have fixed the
problem.

Mike,
I'm glad you fixed your problem, I guess that the XP format didn't change
the boot sector, but after the cleaning
it has been forced to write it to the CF.
If this is correct the same action is done by Bootprep.
Actions to avoid on the development PC!
