| Hello,
|
| I'm new to PC's. Just bought a laptop with Windows XP. I've had three
| MAC's and all three came with bundled fax software. I can't find any third
| party faxing software on my laptop. How do you fax on a PC? I also have MS
| Office. Is there something in there for faxing?
|
| Thanks,

hi every1,
I have a small but dangerous problem.my msconfig.exe and
regedit.exe disappear in 5-10sec after running them from RUN window. Also if
i change their names to for eg, regedit.exe to regedit.com then regedit runs
easily and does not disappear, also if msconfig.exe is renamed to
msconfig.com then it does not disappear. But the same does not happen with
Norton Antivirus 2002, it just disappears if i take my mouse to it on the
task bar, also if i double click on its icon on the icon on desktop it opens
the window of registration, when i skip it it shows me the Liveupdate,Full
scan, and another option, when i click on NEXT it justs wait for a few
seconds and disappears.
I have also gone to programfiles>norton>navw32.exe and the main window opens
but then it again disappears. This is bugging me a lot, NAV2002 is not
working.
Also i have uninstalled nav2002 many times and installed again, i deleted
the directories also many times after uninstalling and installed nav2002
again but the same problem again and again, also msconfig.exe, and
regedit.exe giving the same problem too.
what to do now??? my OS is winxp home with service pack1.
I am on 24hrs DSL connection. on an inside machine connected to the main
winxp prof machine which has the main internet ip address.

thanks

MOHIT.

First, be sure your antivirus software has the latest definitions and run a
virus scan. With regard to NAV 2002, have you tried removing and
reinstalling it and checked www.symantec.com for an updates for the
application and then tried to run it?

Second, download, install and run Ad Aware:
www.lavasoftusa.com

As to your other issues:

If this is a relatively recent issue, you might try using System Restore to
take you back to a time when this worked properly. Start\All
Programs\Accessories\System Tools\System Restore. If that doesn't resolve
it, try the information below.

The following assumes you have an actual XP CD as opposed to a restore CD or
restore partition supplied by your PC manufacturer.

Go to Start, type sfc /scannow in the run box and press enter. Note, there
is a space between sfc and the forward slash. You will be asked for your XP
CD. Be aware, upon inserting the CD the XP setup screen may appear, this is
not a part of sfc /scannow, rather it is being invoked by autorun. Simply
minimize the screen and allow sfc to continue.

If the above fails to resolve the issue, try a repair install as follows:

Be sure you are well backed up in case there is a problem from which you are
unable to recover. NOTE, while a repair install should leave your data
files intact, if something goes wrong during the repair install, you may be
forced to start over and do a clean install of XP. If you don't have your
data backed up, you would lose your data should that eventuality occur.

Assuming your system is set to boot from the CD-ROM drive, boot with the XP
CD in the drive. If it isn't or you are not sure, you need to enter the
system's BIOS. When you boot the system, the first screen usually has
instructions that if you wish to enter setup press a specific key, when you
see that, do so. Then you will have to navigate to the boot sequence, if
the CD-ROM drive is not first line, set it first in the boot sequence. Save
your settings and exit with the XP CD in the drive. The system will reboot.

Boot from the CD. If your system is set to be able to boot from the CD, it
should detect the disk and give a brief message, during the boot up, if you
wish to boot from the CD press any key.

Once you have pressed a key, setup should begin. You will see a reference
asking if you need to load special drivers and another notice that if you
wish to begin the ASR (Automatic Recovery Console) depress F2. Just let
setup run past all of that. It will continue to load files and drivers.

Then it will bring you to a screen. Eventually, you will come to a screen
with the option to (1) setup Windows or (2) Repair Windows Installation
using the Recovery console.

The first option, to setup Windows is the one you want and requires you to
press enter. When asked, press F8 to accept the end user agreement. Setup
will then search for previous versions of Windows. Upon finding your
version, it will ask if you wish to Repair your current installation or
install fresh. Press R, that will run a repair installation. From there
on, follow the screens.

Please correct you clock and time zone settings.
Then repost.

Your future dated post has been removed as it is not acceptable for them
to remain at the top of the newsgroup for such a long period of time
especially for the web interface users who cannot just delete their local

Try running them in a cmd window. Select run. enter cmd and run it.
The run the msconfig from the resulting psuedo DOS prompt in the black
box.

Greetings --

The type of behavior you describe is typical behavior of more than
one virus/worm, the three below being the most common:

W32.Klez
http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/[email protected]

W32.Yaha
http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/[email protected]

W32.Spybot.Worm
http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/w32.spybot.worm.html

Because many of the newer viruses and worms, such as the
Spybot mentioned above, can disable antivirus applications whose
definitions aren't kept up-to-date, try using one or more of the free
on-line scanners to double-check your system.

Trend Micro - Free online virus Scan

McAfee Security - FreeScan

I can't help with NAV, but have a virus. Likely one of the following:

W32.Klez
http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/[email protected]

W32.Yaha
http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/[email protected]

W32.Spybot.Worm
http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/w32.spybot.worm.html

Or a variant of one of these.

For additional help see www.dougknox.com, Win XP Utilities, Create Emergency Copies of Critical XP System Utilities. This small VB Program will create backup, usable copies of Task Manger, Regedit and MSConfig (named Taskmgr1.exe, Regedit.com and MSConfig1.exe) in a new folder C:\EmergencyUtil. Many virus programs will intercept these programs, based on their original file name. The modified file names, allow them to be run. Open Windows Explorer to C:\EmergencyUtil and double click the application you need. The next revision will allow you to browse for the folder you want to place the backups in.

Additionally, see the Win XP Utilities section for Startup Programs Tracker. This small utility scans your system for startup programs and running processes. It also allows you to create a log file that can be copied and pasted into a newsgroup post. The contents of the program window are also copied to the Windows Clipboard, automatically. For replies to newsgroup posts, do NOT include the Running Services, unless its absolutely necessary.

Would you mind fixing your clock/timezone/calendar (delete as appropriate).
It's still June the world over (here it's the 24th, but in some places it's
the 25th). Your clock and zone appear correct, but you're eight days ahead
of GMT. Please set your calendar to the correct date. It's in your own best
interests because: -

1) Many don't respond to post dated posts (other than to tell the poster
their settings are wrong)
2) Many servers will delete postdated messages, as it's a tactic used by
spammers

FWIW, I've had VERY good luck with Panda on-line scanning:

One advantage of on-line scanning is you know it's up to date!

I don't and didn't assume anything. The instructions are worded that way in
order to prevent users from "chasing their tails" looking for tools that MAY
not have been included if they have a manufacturer supplied OEM disk.
Retail OEM disks have the necessary tools and routines by they way. Some
manufacturer supplied CDs are virtually identical to the retail version as
well.

I can only supply information and give users parameters in which the
information will work and in which the instructions are applicable. I can't
help what OEMs do, though we have been screaming at them to start including
the XP tools with whatever recovery option they give their users.
Nonetheless, armed with this information, a user can purchase a retail
version knowing it may come in handy in dealing with issues and give them
more options than "Wipe your drive, lose all your information and start
over." Of course if everybody backed up their data, then that wouldn't be
an issue either except for the drudgery of having to reinstall everything.

Conversely, they can contact their OEM and see if the OEM will supply a CD
or do so at a reduced price. The decision about what to do belongs to the
user, I can only list the options and I'm not about to give such thorough
instructions in a vacuum only to run the risk a less informed user might
spend fruitless hours looking for something that may not exist on their
setup.

The point is, if I don't at least mention that, the uninformed only become
more frustrated. The word assume in the context of my post is meant to give
the user a framework for the instructions and is meant to inform! It
doesn't mean I was making an assumption you, they, anyone had such a disk.
The very fact I worded it the way I did, shows precisely the opposite, i.e.
that I'm well aware there are OEM CDs that don't have the necessary tools;
OEM in this case meaning a manufacturers customized disk or recovery CD.
Nonetheless, users should know such tools and methods are available. It's
up to them to decide whether or not they wish to avail themselves.
