That's all built in...

Click the start button, type in fax (ps, when you click start you can now
just type in what your looking for,,, the most overlooked part of new Vista)

Look for windows fax and scan at the top of the search window...

Doesn't bring up anything other than some old fax documents that I had
laying around on one of my old hard drives, in Vista Home Premium.

From what I've been reading, fax and scan or something similar to that is
not in home premium, at least I can't find anything in mine about it.

I don't know about any third party software that might work.
But, Windows Fax only comes with the Business and Ultimate versions.

At this point I think people should just go the extra mile and get
Ultimate... I wish MS would stop wasting peoples time with the multi
versions...

Check out Snappy FAX version 4.0 at http://www.snappysoftware.com . There is
a free 30 day trail. I have not been able to get it to work yet but I think
the problem is a compatibility problem between Vista and my Conexant
SoftV92Data Fax Modem driver rather than between Vista and the Snappy FAX
software. The functionality is similar to Symantec's Winfax Pro.

If you still have a copy of Quicklink II lying around (not anything newer
like 3) you can use it with that modem. Once you load it don't bother with
the com port check - won't work but you can set it to com3 manually. This
version opens like a terminal (remember the old bulletin boards?) and you
can fax from within it. It does NOT load a print driver so you cannot fax
out of an application but you can fax any txt document and it does not have
a 30 day trial. There is, of course, no support for this ancient software
but it does, at least, work.

I just installed Snappy Fax. Thanks for the info. It looks like a great
fax program and it seems to be working well...and does more than my old
WinFax Pro did.

Though it balked at Vonage a bit, Snappy Fax, baud rate lowered to 9600,
finally worked for me. It's $29...and now I don't have to upgrade to a more
expensive version of Vista! Ya-hooooooo!

Yes and if you have one line a good fax switch.
Fax software at snappysoftware.com Snappy Fax Verision 4.0 is working fine
for me.

Also I only have one line for data and voice.
I bought a fax switch from Stapple.
It was ComSwitch 5500 and I used the Semi-automactic mode and it works great.

I'm trying:
http://www.nicocuppen.com/
Version 4.23: Fax Machine is now ready for Vista!
Send and receive faxes without a fax machine!
Other features that make Fax Machine stand out:
Distinctive Ring support, even on Windows XP/Vista systems
Can forward received faxes by e-mail, even automatically right after the fax
is received
Can print received faxes automatically right after the fax is received
Can print log of sent and received faxes, or save these logs to a text file
Can be set to start when Windows starts
You can specify what printer to use to print send confirmations and received
faxes.
Is available in English, Dutch, French, German, Italian and Spanish. Choose
your language when installing the application.
Try Fax Machine for free and see for yourself how it works. Download a
30-day trial version from the download page. Fax Machine is shareware.
Program details:
Fax Machine contains a printer driver, which lets you "print" to Fax Machine
from any Windows application that supports printing.
Of course Fax Machine can not only send faxes, but also receive them. It can
even forward received faxes by email.
Fax Machine supports the Distinctive Ring feature, even on Windows XP/Vista
machines!
Requirements:
A Windows 98/ME/NT/2000/XP/Vista system. Windows 95 is not supported!
A scanner that complies with the TWAIN standard (most scanners do).
A class 1, 2 or 2.0 fax modem on serial port 1 through 8 of your PC. This
must be a genuine analog fax modem.
What about cable, DSL or ISDN?
Many users don’t realize that faxing is a function that can only use analog
phone lines and analog fax modems. Accordingly, no fax software will function
with cable modems or DSL lines. With some DSL connections you can obtain a
DSL line filter, suitable for connecting a standard analog voice line to the
DSL line, and you can then connect an analog fax modem to that line.
If you don't have an analog modem or an analog phone line, you can't use Fax
Machine.
Version 4.23:
Fax Machine is now ready for Vista!
Faxes forwarded by email are now sent in PDF format (no longer in TIFF
format).
Adding setting to switch off your scanner's Automatic Document Feeder.
When forwarding received faxes by email Fax Machine will use the Address
Book to find the sender's name, based on his/her remote station ID, and put
that name in the subject line of the mail.
After having received a fax Fax Machine will only flash its taskbar icon
when the received fax in neither printed nor forwarded by email.
When an error occurs while sending a fax, Fax Machine will now show the
number of the last correctly sent page.
Fixed bug while printing list of faxes in Inbox and Outbox and list contains
multiple pages.
Fixed bug which caused Fax Machine to crash when closing the application on
a Windows 98 system.
Changed location of folders of Inbox and Outbox to avoid confusion from
Vista's virtualization system.
Changed location of debugging logfile to avoid confusion from Vista's
virtualization system.

I just got new machine w/ Home Premium installed...the one thing I really
NEED is fax software, you know the kind M.S. has been throwing in since
Win95? I guess I'm supposed to drop another $50+ for ultimate to get it. I
found Fax Machine v 3.25 on download.com and tried it. Prayers were answered
could send and receive fax using scanner, printer etc...just like the old
days hence called PV (pre vista). Until I shut the machine off...then when I
started it back up I got the black screen of death. Nothing, I had to
physically pull the plug out of the wall to get machine to boot and then had
to do system restore. Guess what Fax Machine came up MIA. I tried downloading
and reinstalling 3 more times but same thing happened. I'll try the snappy
version maybe I'll have better luck. For what it's worth you'd think MS would
offer fax/scan as a type of free download, it's not like they're in chapter
11 or anything!!!

I found a great one here http://www.rkssoftware.com/index.html , the RKS Fax
is working great on Vista Home Premium. It places a fax choice in the print
options. Any program Word, Publisher, etc. I just choose RKS Fax for printer,
and it works. Only $19.95 after 30 day trial.
