Fax Service & Telephone

I have enabled the fax service on my WinXP system.
Sending faxes, no problem. Receiving faxes is an issue
since I use the same dial-up line as my telephone. Does
the Windows Fax Service recognize an incoming call has a
fax, if it is a fax call, and ignore the call if it is a
phone call? I'd like to get rid of my old fax machine.
It currently "listens" to the incoming call and picks up
if it is an incoming fax but does not pick up phone
calls. This allows my answering machine to pick up the
call instead. Does the Windows Fax Service handle
incoming calls the same way?

Distinctive Ring is not supported by Windows XP. Therefore, Windows XP Fax
will answer every incoming call it receives. The alternative is to install
an external switching device to your phone line.
