Hi there...

I dual boot XP Pro and Win2000 and use MS Fax Service on both using a Supra
modem.
XP fax causes Explorer.exe to listen to the Internet on 1024 but 2K does not
and I was hoping someone could tell me why this is so.

The following is with fxssvc.exe started on XP:

ALG.EXE:1816 TCP 127.0.0.1:3001 0.0.0.0:0 LISTENING
EXPLORER.EXE:1544 TCP 0.0.0.0:1024 0.0.0.0:0 LISTENING
EXPLORER.EXE:1544 TCP 127.0.0.1:1024 127.0.0.1:3040 ESTABLISHED
FXSSVC.EXE:380 TCP 0.0.0.0:3040 0.0.0.0:0 LISTENING
FXSSVC.EXE:380 TCP 127.0.0.1:3040 127.0.0.1:1024 ESTABLISHED
SVCHOST.EXE:1028 TCP 127.0.0.1:3002 0.0.0.0:0 LISTENING
SVCHOST.EXE:1028 TCP 127.0.0.1:3003 0.0.0.0:0 LISTENING
SVCHOST.EXE:1028 UDP 0.0.0.0:3004 *:*
SVCHOST.EXE:1028 UDP 127.0.0.1:3005 *:*
SVCHOST.EXE:1028 UDP 192.168.0.1:53 *:*
SVCHOST.EXE:1028 UDP 192.168.0.1:67 *:*
SVCHOST.EXE:1028 UDP 192.168.0.1:68 *:*
SVCHOST.EXE:1168 UDP 0.0.0.0:3006 *:*
SVCHOST.EXE:1168 UDP 0.0.0.0:3007 *:*
SVCHOST.EXE:860 TCP 0.0.0.0:135 0.0.0.0:0 LISTENING
System:4 TCP 0.0.0.0:445 0.0.0.0:0 LISTENING
System:4 TCP 0.0.0.0:1025 0.0.0.0:0 LISTENING
System:4 TCP 192.168.0.1:139 0.0.0.0:0 LISTENING

System:4 UDP 192.168.0.1:137 *:*
System:4 UDP 192.168.0.1:138 *:*

And this is with fxssvc.exe not starting at boot:

ALG.EXE:1796 TCP 127.0.0.1:3001 0.0.0.0:0 LISTENING
SVCHOST.EXE:1016 TCP 127.0.0.1:3002 0.0.0.0:0 LISTENING
SVCHOST.EXE:1016 TCP 127.0.0.1:3003 0.0.0.0:0 LISTENING
SVCHOST.EXE:1016 UDP 0.0.0.0:3004 *:*
SVCHOST.EXE:1016 UDP 127.0.0.1:3005 *:*
SVCHOST.EXE:1016 UDP 192.168.0.1:53 *:*
SVCHOST.EXE:1016 UDP 192.168.0.1:67 *:*
SVCHOST.EXE:1016 UDP 192.168.0.1:68 *:*
SVCHOST.EXE:1148 UDP 0.0.0.0:3006 *:*
SVCHOST.EXE:1148 UDP 0.0.0.0:3007 *:*
SVCHOST.EXE:864 TCP 0.0.0.0:135 0.0.0.0:0 LISTENING
System:4 TCP 0.0.0.0:445 0.0.0.0:0 LISTENING
System:4 TCP 0.0.0.0:1025 0.0.0.0:0 LISTENING
System:4 TCP 192.168.0.1:139 0.0.0.0:0 LISTENING
System:4 UDP 0.0.0.0:445 *:*
System:4 UDP 192.168.0.1:137 *:*
System:4 UDP 192.168.0.1:138 *:*

Thanks for any enlightenment.

On XP, this port is used by the server to send notifications (status
messages).

Really...status messages to -who-.<smile>
I'm not (I don't think) running anything that could be considered a "server", other than this machine is the ICS box for my LAN.
I don't like having open ports facing the 'Net and in fact MBSA flags it and the port scan at www.grc.com gives a warning as well.
Any idea on how to close it?

Thanks for your time, Vinod.
