All,

I have a mission. That is to create a Fax/Print server for work.

My goals...

-Must reuse an existing PC to create this new server...
Which means it will probably be a 700-800mhz P3 with about 128MB RAM,
10GB hard drive, and I have access to multiple NICs and Modems...

I also have some Dell c640 laptops laying around that are not being
used.

-Must use software that I have a license for...
win 95, win 98, win NT server, win 2000 server, win XP pro, win 2003
server, I might
even consider unix for this one...

-Must be able to:
Connect to the domain.
Send and Receive faxes.
Forward the faxes to the users.
Send the faxes from the users.
Act as a print server.

If anyone has suggestions plese let me know. Thanks!!!
-Randy

Let's elimitate 9x from the mix please. Not a great idea. Xp pro isn't
a server class os either.

Given system requirements, especially RAM, would go for NT server if
you can find NT drivers for your stuff, and you are comfortable with NT
in general. Otherwise, you'll want the more modern OS. Win2k server,
maybe.

The laptops are simply too good to be buired in the back as a server.
Also the expandability and maintability of a laptop is limited.

You will be pushing large images back and forth, so you will want more
memory. Try to get it to 512 or more if you can. If you want the
ability to STORE (archive) these faxes, you will want a larger hard
drive, and at least one backup.

One of my previous employers had a fax server that they devolped using
Delphi. Whether you want to do this depends on how important this is,
the volume of faxes, and your resources. The volume they handled was
staggering (several thousand/day).

Best of luck, that's a big project.
