i am trying to set up a fax operation. How do I get the fax numbers? Do I
have to do something to my address book?

A FAX number is just a regular phone line that has a FAX
machine (or FAX modem) connected. To get a FAX number you
have to be giving that number by the person or company that
has the machine. If you put a phone number in the FAX field
in the addressbook, and then use that address in the FAX,
the system will input the number.

Thanks for the response. I know about fax numbers in the normal sense but I
thought when you are using a computer fax that you would just use the e mail
address of the party you are sending a fax to.

FAX is just a phone service to send data. Email is part of
the Internet.

Joe,
If you are on anything other than a phone line you will need a phone modem
to send FAXes. Myself, I'm on DSL modem router for Internet Service but also
have a phone line FAX modem for FAXing. (Same wire as the DSL service but
use the dial tone that's on the line).

You are confusing your technologies. Faxes MUST go out over a Plain
Old Telephone Service (POTS) line. You can't send a fax over the
internet.

There are services that provide a fax gateway - you can email them
either the text of your fax, or include a file that has the stuff you
want faxed - but they take your text/file, then dump it to a fax/modem
and send it to the recipient over - are you ready - POTS.

Why pay the middleman? Either install a fax/modem in your computer
(they aren't real expensive) or buy a fax machine.
