When I open Internet Exporer there are four "sex" sites on my favourites list
which I did not put there. I have tried deleting them but they keep
reappearing - how do I get rid of these permanently. I have installed adware
and run scans but this has not made a blind bit of difference. Can someone
help?

Dude you may have spyware or adware, if I were you go to:

http://download.zonelabs.com/bin/promotions/spywaredetector/index3.html,

This is the zonelarm spyware detector web-site and do a scan of ur pc in IE5 or above. It's also worth getting some anti-spyware s/w installed on ur pc such as the freebie from microsoft and maybe one other one such as webroot spy sweeper.

More informative info available in the link below.

You are infected with scumware/spyware/malware.

Some of this does not apply if you have Windows XP SP2. If you do not have
SP2, get it

First. Make sure of these settings and nothing will install without you
answering YES. (Except what may install as part of some other software.)
Don't click YES if you don't know/trust the source.

Start | Settings | Control Panel | Internet Options | Advanced tab |
Make sure both of these are NOT checked.

Enable Install On Demand (Internet Explorer)
[[Specifies to automatically download and install Internet Explorer
components if a Web page needs them in order to display the page properly or
perform a particular task.]]

Enable Install On Demand (Other)
[[Specifies to automatically download and install Web components if a Web
page needs them in order to display the page properly or perform a
particular task.]]

Apply | OK

Enable Install On Demand (Other)
Is part of the driveby downloading of unwanted programs. i.e. Scumware or
whatever will install w/o you even being aware of it.

Second. If you need a scan right now.

Third.
It is known as scumware. Visit these sites. 1, 2, 3 and 4 are really good.
Download, install, run, update and run again; one or all. They are all
good, FREE utilities. Make sure you update every program, even if you
just downloaded it. You must have the latest updates. Without updates,
you have a gun without ammo. You also need to use more than one
anti scumware program. One program will *not* catch everything.

DO NOT! install service pack2 until your system is Clean!
If you do your system may become unbootable. Many types of malware will wreck
havoc if you install SP2.With that said here are a few tools to help clean
your system

YES-You need more than 1 malware program, the one's below are all free
and work well.
LSP-fix- http://www.cexx.org/lspfix.htm
Spybot S&D - http://www.safer-networking.org/en/index.html

About Buster- http://www.spychecker.com/program/aboutbuster.html
Ad-Aware SE - http://majorgeeks.com/Ad-Aware_SE_Personal_d506.html
CWShredder -http://www.intermute.com/spysubtract/cwshredder_download.html
Hijack this - http://www.majorgeeks.com/download3155.html\
Hijackthis tutorial -
http://forums.maddoktor2.com/index.php?showtopic=165
SpywareBlaster - http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html

Start of using Ad-AwareSE and Spybot install both and update the programs,
scan your system once in normal mode and again in safe mode.
The LSP-fix is to repair your internet connection (if needed) after removal
of the parasites."This is a MUST download!"
Spywareblaster may prevent this from happening again (once everything is
removed).

Good Luck.
