favorites not an html-cannot import

My computer got corrupted, and I had to backup from an external hard drive
after reformatting. I am trying to import my IE and Mozilla bookmarks and
favorites into the programs, but I cannot find the most recent files on the
external hd. I have found older files. The problem is the folders I found
are not html, and I cannot import them into the new programs.

I have tried to search for folders named "favorites" and "bookmarks," but
they do not have the most recent setup that was present before the
corruption. I copied the favorites folder from my old computer to the backup
before I reformatted, but it does not have the most recent setup, and it is
not html.

I am using XP pro.

Rightclick a blank spot on your desktop, the "New", then "Shortcut"
Put in any web address, like e.g. http://www.support.microsoft.com
next a title, like "MS Support"
OK
From your desktop, drag the shortcut into the Favorites folder.
(start/run, type : %userprofile%/Favorites)

This can be done to any shortcut.
