Favorites bar

When I click on the favorites icon at the top of IE6, the favorites area
opens on the left of the screen, but it's blank. I can find my favorites
folder in C:\Documents and Settings\All Users. ALSO, This appears to be
affecting my ability to intsll some software updates. I get an message that
says: Error 1606: Could not access network location
%USERPROFILE%\Favorites\. Does this mean it's looking for a folder on a
network? I don't have a network setup on this machine.
Thanks.

Hi Gregg :)

Try the following and see if it helps:

Favorites do not show in side panel

Is the pushpin in (locked) or out (autohide). Sometimes toggling the setting
works.

Also, deleting these registry keys *may* help:

HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main\window_placement

HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet
Explorer\Desktop\OldWorkAreas\OldWorkAreaRects

(Courtesy of Sandi -)

also....

Favorites are missing

Courtesy of Remesh -

Open Registry Editor and navigate to this location:
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User
Shell Folders]
In the right-pane, double-click "Favorites" and copy the value and post it
here.

The correct value should be: "%USERPROFILE%\Favorites"

or........................

Use FolderRedirector utility and reset the shell folder paths for Favorites
to the default values (both user shell folders and shell folders registry
keys)

Using FolderRedirector utility to redirect special folders in Windows XP:
http://www.mvps.org/sramesh2k/folderredirector.htm

or…..

In XP….there is a local user policy for Favorites, and there is a check box
to delete the Favorites and only use the Favorites provided in the policy.
Check to be sure this setting is not selected.

You may also have a corrupted Favorites Folder..

Get rid of the malware, and then create a new Favorites folder as per
the instructions at the URL below:
http://inetexplorer.mvps.org/answers3.htm#favorites

If these steps do not resolve your problem, or you need help with the above,
please post back to this thread with the details and any error messages.

Hope this helps

Your Favorites folder should be C:\Documents and Settings\{UserID}, which
is what %USERPROFILE% should expand to. The Favorites folder under All
Users apparently isn't used for anything.

To check on your Favorites folder, open Windows Explorer (not IE) and type
%userprofile%\Favorites in the address bar. That will either open your
Favorites folder and show you what's in there or produce a "page cannot be
displayed" message if the folder doesn't exist.
