Favicons - Why not in the browser bar?

J

Jeff Wisnia

Is it normal for IE 6.0 to always display only the "Explorer" favorite
icon at the beginning of the browser bar?

The correct favicons (When the site has one)show up in my IE 6.0
"Favorites List", but not on the Browser bar.

Netscape Navigator 7.1 always puts the web site's favicon in the browser
bar.

I was adding favicons to my personal web pages when I noticed this.

Thanks guys,

Jeff

IE is not very well behaved about this feature. Sometimes it will show up
after you restart your computer and go back to the site. Unfortunately, the
will also disappear when the temporary files are deleted unless you use a
third party add-on. Check out line 108 at Kelly's-Korner:

Thanks, I'm glad it wasn't "me".

Hi Jeff - One trick that sometimes works is to "grab" the non-Fav icon on
the left in the Address Bar and "drag" it to the right end of the Address
Bar and then release. It will then (sometimes) restore to the left with the
correct FavIcon. :)

Right you are about that, but it doesn't seem like much of a solution,
does it?

And the favicons in my favorites list seem to go away when I shut down,
even if I do nothing deliberate to empty any caches and such.

Thanks anyway, but it's just another reason I'm prone to stick with
Netscape..<G>

Hi Jeff - These are known as favicons.ico (Favorite Icons) and they normally
will only last until your Internet Explorer Temp files are cleared, which
for you is probably on shut down and why you consequently loose them.

You need to get a program called FavOrg 1.4 here:

http://www.gratilog.net/anglais/internet/favorg.zip
http://uk.geocities.com/personel44/files/favorg.zip

or Version 1.2 here:

http://www.liemar.com.br/construindoseusite/downloads/favorg.zip
http://www.themes.myqth.com/Downloads/favorg.zip

(still free at these links) which will allow you to save them permanently
in a different folder and re-associate your favorites with the stored icons.
(It will also verify whether your links in Favorites are stll good, BTW.)

If you want to read more about it first, go here:

You can also try FavIoncizer, here:
http://www.codeproject.com/tools/faviconizer.asp?target=favicons I've used
this and it's quite good,. It will actually find about a third more than
FavOrg does (since it checks for referenced URL's), but lacks some of the
other cababilites of FavOrg, Recommended.
