i have a windows 98 machine that gives me a fatal error code 4d6ff58h
when i try to upgrade to xp. i checked for compatibility issues prior
to upgrading
and nothing major there to cause this problem im running roughly
128-192 Mg ram. any ideas?
I don't get any Google hits with the error code from your post. Are you
sure you copied it correctly? When do you get the error?
I would test your RAM. NT-based operating systems are much fussier about
the quality of the RAM than Win9x and if your RAM is marginal, that
could cause the problem. To test RAM, I like Memtest86+ which you can
get from
www.memtest.org. Either download the .iso to make a bootable
cd (you'll need third-party burning software) or the precompiled
Windows binary to make a bootable floppy. Boot with the media and the
test will run immediately. If the RAM is faulty, replace it. That's not
really enough RAM for XP, btw. I wouldn't run XP with less than 256MB
of RAM.
Also, make sure you don't have any peripherals (printer, scanner,
camera, webcam, etc.) connected when doing an installation.
