Fatal Error During XP Pro Install

Guest

I've been trying to upgrade an HP Pavilion 8655C to Windows XP from 98 (SE, I think). I get the following error message at the beginning of the "Analyzing Your Computer" step:

Fatal Error

Setup cannot continue. Contact Microsoft Technical Support. (Error: F8FF58h)

[OK]

....and Setup aborts. I have borrowed another copy and tried to install, but I get the same error, so the problem is likely with my system. Does anyone know what this error is, and if there are workarounds or fixes? Thanks very much in advance.
