FastStone - how to create file?

Following my start with FastStone Image Viewer today, I have a couple
of basic queries. (In addition to the one I raised about JPG Comment
display earlier.)

With IrfanView, it is very easy for me to capture an image from
anywhere and save it as a new image file. With the image captured on
the clipboard by whatever method, I first click my IrfanView WinXP
launch icon and that opens a blank window. I press Ctrl+v to paste it
in, and then save it with a name of my choice. Done.

How about the equivalent with FastStone please? If I open FastStone, I
get the browser. Then I click the lower left pane, and paste to there.
But it seems to pick up the filename of whatever I was viewing before.
Can I open FastStone to an empty window, just as in IV?

Also, is it possible to Crop an image in FastStone? Or is it
exclusively a (very good) viewer?

Edit - Crop board

To avoid it using the name of the previous file, make sure you have no
image marked. Then it suggested something like 2005-10-04_192745.png
when I wanted to save my clipboard content.

But not pretty, and to cumbersome.

A way around: Make sure you leave the program in a directory without
images, then it start up 'empty'.

Thanks for those answers, Vegard. I'll try them tomorrow.

I'll probably use a combination of Irfanview, Faststone and copernicus
desktop search to do all my photo work. IV, although very old, still
does 95% of what I want. Too bad it doesn't have an easy add jpg comment
or EXIF, IPTC tags otherwise I would use it exclusively and then index
with copernicus.

I guess if Faststone did everything that irfanview did then I might
consider totally switching.

I also need to check out xnview again to see if that has been improved
with regards to exif, iptc and jpg comments.

From the image browser window, just click File, New. The image preview
window goes blank. Press Ctrl-V to paste in the image you have in the
clipboard. Then click File, Save As. Type in the filename, click the Save
button.

Also, is it possible to Crop an image in FastStone?

when img is selected, i use it for quick cropping:
press Ctrl+R
also quick tn's
press X

after either,
press CTRL+S
FS suggests a name, appends _cr to cropped
(but IIRC, one has to manually edit suggested name to create a new one for tn's)

i keep fs in my sendto, where i can send (open) folders or img files
