Hello

Simple solution read your Mother MANUAL, or look up
your mother at the manufactuere's website

Mothers come with manuals nowadays? That sure would have
been useful when I was a kid.

Hi, Steve.

As Alvin Brown said, read your motherboard's user's manual. Then visit the
mobo maker's website. Often, faster CPUs come to market after a mobo has
been built, shipped and sold. No way the original owner's manual could have
known about these, so look on the website for up-to-date info. Also, be
sure to check there for an updated BIOS. Often a later BIOS will enable us
to use a later CPU or RAM or other upgrade.

Is VIA KT266A the model of your mobo? Or of the chipset on a mobo made by
someone else, such as DFI? If you post the exact make and model, someone
here might recognize it and have some specific advice.

The ASUS A7V266 only supports up to the 2600+. ASUS is very good at
making sure they update the BIOS to support newer CPU's, so this is
probably the highest you will be able to go with a 1st generation board
based on this chip.

As stated by the others, you are going to have to find the website for
your motherboard and find what processors are supported. You can often
find this information in the release notes for new BIOS revisions as
well. It is possible that updating your BIOS will allow you to use a
newer CPU ;)
