Fast User Switching Not Working

G

Guest

I cannot get FUS to work. This is a recent problem on my Dell Dimension 4700
running Window XP SP2 (Home Edition). When I select "Log Off" I get the old 2
line login requestor and can only have 1 user at a time. I have tried with
and without passwords for both/either of the 2 users.

I can confirm the following:
1.) Use "Windows Welcome Screen" and "Fast User Switching" is selected on
the "Users" control panel
2.) msgina.dll is being used by my WinXP
3.) Terminal, Fast User Switching Compatibility and Remote Procedure Call
(RPC) services ARE running

I've tried most of the fixes I've found researching on these and other
Newsgroups/websites.
Can anyone help me further?
Is re-installing WinXP from the CDs and going back and getting all the
updates my only option?
Any suggestions are GREATLY appreciated.

If the "AllowMultipleTSSessions" Policy is enabled, you'll be able to check
the "Fast User Switching" box. However, the option gets deselected
automatically. You can verify it by opening the dialog again.

Delete the "AllowMultipleTSSessions" value from the following key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\policies\system

Is the GinaDLL registry value existent? FYI, the value is needed only when
using a 3rd party GINA.

Delete the GinaDLL registry entry. To do so:

WARNING: If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious
problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft
cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using Registry
Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.

a. Click Start, and then click Run.
b. In the Open box, type regedit, and then click OK.
c. Locate, and then click the following registry key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\WinLogon

d. In the right pane, right-click GinaDLL, and then click Delete.
e. Click Yes when you are prompted to confirm the deletion.
f. On the File menu, click Exit to quit Registry Editor.

Just my 2 cents.

Ramesh, thank you very much for taking the time to respond. I've researched
you suggestions below.

Delete the "AllowMultipleTSSessions" value from the following key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\policies\system

"AllowMultipleTSSessions" is NOT present in that 'key' however it is in the
key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\WinLogon
Should I delete it from there?

Also FUS remains checked and I don't have that problem with it become
'unchecked'.

NO Gina reference of any sort in the right hand panel of this key.

Hi mtviewer2000-ca.

Nope. That value is required.

Thought so. But posted to double-check.

With almost all possibilities covered, I'm running out of ideas. But will
certainly research on this further and post back if I find anything.

Found something interesting.

Make a registry backup first: http://www.winxptutor.com/regback.htm

Open Regedit.exe and navigate to:

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon]

In the right pane, note down the Value data assigned to "UIHost". *Post the
info in your reply.*

Secondly, see if the "UIHost" value exists under the following key:

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\policies\system]

Note that the "UIHost" value is non-existent by default, in the above
location. If it's present, delete it.

Close Regedit.exe

It's:

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\TuneUp Software\TuneUp
Utilities\WinStyler\tu_logonui.exe

(It's dawning on me I should have mentioned the modification SW for the'
Welcome Screen' graphic -- though I have tried "resetting to default" with no
benefit. Using "Fast User Switching" and "Windows Welcome Screen"
(customized) IS switched on in "TuneUp" ).

GREAT CATCH by the way!

Guess it's time to uninstall this "TuneUp" and see if that affects my
problem. (Note: I just 'upgraded' to the next release of "TuneUp" (v.4.1.2))
in a trial version. My FUS problem pre-dates this upgrade. Also "TuneUp" and
FUS had worked together reliably in the past.

Also, "UIHost" does NOT exists under the following key:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\policies\system]

A Registry "Find" search does NOT find it any where else either.

Excellent. It's indeed the third-party UI loader that's causing the problem.
Haven't used TuneUp utilities though. BTW, the default UIHost data is
"logonui.exe"

Fine. Pls ignore that key then. As I said, it does not exist by default, but
created only when a group policy is set.

Halleujah and pass the drinks. After a month and a half the FUS/Windows
Welcome Screen returneth like errant children.

GREAT detective work Ramesh!!!

I removed both versions of "Tune-Up Untilities".

After rebooting I found the Value data assigned to "UIHost" the key:

"[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon]"

was still referencing the Tune-Up Utilities.

I edited the Value to "logonui.exe", rebooted and Viola!

Thank you VERY much Ramesh!!!!
