I recently started using fast user switching and before that I rarely
got access violations from windows explorer. Now I often get them
along with event log messages "The shell stopped unexpectedly and
Explorer.exe was restarted." Is there a fix for this, or do I have to
stop using fast user switching?

First check that your RAM is OK.

Get memtest86+ from www.memtest.org.

I traced the problem to a shell extension that uses the dll daneng.dll
in the system32 directory. It does not have any version, description,
or company information. And it does not seem to be associated with any
application. I disabled the extension with shexview but it kept being
reenabled somehow. I went into recovery console and renamed it to
something else. Now everything works ok and explorer.exe does not
crash when using fast user switching.

I googled daneng.dll but could not find anything. Does anyone know
what this dll is used for and what company its from?

Thanks,
Chris

It's bad when you can't google a DLL, (think: red flag for possible
virus or spyware) . What was the name of the shell extention you
disabled? You might be able to trace it that way.

In shellexview the extension has no name, has a type of "browser helper
object", and has no other information except the filename (daneng.dll)
and clsid. It has no file types associated with it.

I'm thinking spyware. Especially with it being a browser helper
object.

You should run a spyware scan.
