Fast-Switching & screensaver

M

Michael Seidner

I have two users on my computer...myself (administrator) and my wife
(limited user account). When both accounts are logged on (using
fast-switching) and my wife is using her account for over 30 minutes and I
return to my account, sometimes the screensaver begins as soon as my desktop
appears and I find myselft back at the welcome screen after I stop the
screensaver. I then must login again. This is not a major problem but it
seems as if the screensaver counts the time that my wife is using her
desktop as time I am idle. Is this by design? My screensaver settings are
set to start after 30 minutes idle time and to return to the Welcome screen
upon activity.

Hi Michael,

I have not tested this but it makes sense. When you switch to another
account using Fast User Switching the original account is still logged
on, but idle, thus invoking the screen saver. To test this, uncheck
"On resume, password protect" in the screen saver properties. When you
log back onto the original account after the 30 minutes you should
only see the screen saver for a brief moment (do to mouse movement)
and then the desktop.

Yeah, it makes sense to me too. But, I like the security of the "Welcome
screen on resume" option (my son visits a lot). I think I'll just increase
the time recquired to activate the screensaver because my wife is usually on
long enough to check some emails. Thanks for your quick response.

Or when your son is over, simply log off!

You can get a automatic Logout screensaver that avoids users
ending up in the wrong profile. I install it by default on all shared
family PC's I work with.
It will close open Apps/Save data and place the computer back
at the Welcome Screen.
Using this you can turn off Fast User Switching - which is handy
but consumes allot of system resources.
It's name is WinExit.Scr and is part of the Windows 2003 ResKit.

You will need to install it as the Screensaver on each users profile
and configure the message and application close option.
