FAST files on external HD -- access denied!

My hard drive went bad, but I was able to back up to an external hard drive.
Then I ran the Files And Settings Transfer wizard and copied the settings to
the external hard drive. Whew!

Removed old internal drive, installed new drive, loaded WinXP Pro sp2,
created new user accounts for myself and the kids (same user names as on
original install), installed programs, downloaded all updates. Now I want to
copy the settings I saved from the external drive to my new internal C: drive.

External drive is E:. Settings are stashed in a folder under E:\Documents
and Settings\Bob (that's me). Explorer lets me look at anything under
E:\Documents and Settings EXCEPT my stuff. When I click on my own saved
folder it says access is denied. How come?

How can I get to my files on the external drive?

Thank you, that worked, but now I have another problem.

I was running sp2 on my computer before the hard drive failed. I created
the FAST files using the wizard on my original WinXP Pro cd (pre-sp1). Now I
have sp2 loaded on the new hard drive and the wizard says it can't read the
settings I saved because they were created by an earlier version of the
wizard.

Is it safe to use the old wizard to load those settings to my new sp2 install?

I tried using the new wizard to create a FAST file from the backup on the
external hard drive but it doesn't seem to offer that option.

I installed the update and rebooted. Still getting the same error using the
wizard on my computer. The patch said it was for transfers from a 32-bit OS
to 64-bit. I don't have the 64-bit OS.

Do you have another suggestion?

Should I try loading the settings with my old copy of WinXP, or would that
be unsafe?

Thanks again for your help.

It wouldn't hurt to try since you are only
transferring files and settings...not any system files.

Hi Bob.

MVP Ramesh Srinivasan has a web site that should help you to recover
your files:

It seems to have worked okay. Been using it a week now with no problems.
Thanks for all your help.
