Fan Connection

Looking to build a PC, probably in a largeish tower case (Antec 1080).
In the old days, you had a fan. This case has the possibility of
running 5 case fans (not counting PS fans, CPU fan, northbridge fan,
and, let us not forget, the video card fan). All this thrust, if
properly directed could probably get the damn computer airborne.

Anyway, back to the case fans. Do all these fans get wired into the
mobo (most likely an ABit IC7-G), or do you just wire some of them
directly to the PS, and let the spin all the time?

Generally speaking, the mobo will have 2-3 3-pin fan headers. At the very
least there will be one for the CPU fan, and one for a case fan. Most have 2
case fan headers. (usually positioned for one rear and one front mounted
case fan)

The only advantage of using the mobo headers over just hooking them up to a
4-pin Molex plug from the PSU is that the mobo connectors include a third
wire for monitoring the RPM (via Motherboard Monitor, or the like) Either
way the fans will only spin when the PC is on ... and when they are on they
will spin at full speed whether connected to the mobo headers or straight to
the PSU.

The only way to get fan throttling is to use a fan controller bus (with
dials or digital controls to throttle the fans), or to get "smart" fans that
monitor temperatures and throttle themselves.

The bottom line is this ...

You will likely have headers on the mobo for 2 of the 5 fans. The other 3
will have to be connected to one of the 4-pin drive power lines coming out
of the PSU. The only difference in behavior is that the ones connected to
the mobo headers will be able to be monitored via MBM, et al.

The video card fan should plug into the video board.

Case fans can either go on the motherboard fan sockets or using adaptors to
go on the psu sockets. My MB has 3 motherboard fan pin places. Adaptors
should come packaged with the fan so they can fit the 4 pin molex psu
thingies. Well, mine did anyway!

Northbridge should be plugged into a motherboard fan slot (maybe labelled on
the motherboard itself for fan speed detection). Maybe already installed.

If you don't want to use multiple connectors to the PSU can you plug in one fan
and 'daisy chain' them by connecting one fan to the other or use some type of
splitter attached to the PSU fan connector so that one can supply two fans?

'Should' work. I've got all 5 case fans daisy chained, in this fashion,
hooked up to one 3-pin port on my fan controller. One knob turns all fans
down/up. However, be aware that this depends on how many Amps the fans
draw. If the motherboards' fan header is rated for less than what the fans
require (collectively), you can fry the motherboard...

Also, if the fans do not support speed monitoring, you will need the type of
4 to 3-pin adaptor that has only two wires (vs. 3 for fans that do support
monitoring).

I bought 4 adaptors, with the intention of running each fan on a separate
channel... By a fluke, one of the adaptors only had two wires. That's the
only one that worked, hence the daisy chain. Anyway, I like using just one
knob for all 5 fans.

You will probably only have 2 or 3 extra connectors on the motherboard.
Once those are filled, connect to the power supply directly if you really
need that much extra cooling. One onboard connector, one fan. Keeps it
simple and doesn't blow the connectors as they won't handle much current.

you better run them connected to Molex PSU connector wired for 7V
(like can be seen on my site under electronics) if not wanting to have
an airplane feeling in your room :)
