I've installed XP upgrade over Me and now the processer fan won't shut down. I remember having (and fixing) this problem before, but I can't remember what the problem is or how to fix it. (If it means anything...in Windows Task manager;Processes..."System Idle Process" shows CPU at 99...everything else at 0...

Thanks--Michael

System Idle Process" shows CPU at 99 % is perfect, thats
1% active. Your fan issue could be from some Fan control
your OEM may have on your old system. If it's a laptop
you can bet on it.

Not a laptop

Sony VIAO PCV-RX380D
1.5Mhz Inte
Windows XP + SP
384M Memor
80G Hard Driv

Why don't you tell us your hardware specs? It sure may help with your
problem! For instance - desktop or laptop?

And, are you expecting the processor fan to shutdown while the pc is
running?

Noooo.....
But it used to slow down and run quieter when there was little load on the processor. Now it just runs all day on high speed

Depending on your motherboard and its settings, there might be some setting
on it that adjusts the fan speed based on the CPU temperature

When you place higher load on the CPU, the temperature goes up, and then
motherboard tells the fan to spin.

Sony has a fix on thier support page. An updated driver addressing just that very problem.....

Go onto Sony's website and look for the drivers for your machine. For my
VAIO desktop the fan was really loud like yours was, but I noticed in
the drivers section that they had a driver that slowed the fan down once
windows XP booted up.
