Failure to recognize USB memory

I have two different Sony "memory vault" USB drives. They
both worked in plug and play fashion with Win XP Pro, no
problem. But suddenly, neither appears in the directory as
an available drive. Moreover, when the USB drive is plugged
in, the computer dings twice instead of the normal one
time. If I run Install New Hardware, indicating a USB
memory device, the system tells me it is there and
functioning properly. I'd appreciate some useful advice as
I presently have two useless devices in the place of what
were very useful ones.

There are known problems with these devices. Check Sony support.
