Failure to Hibernate after XP3 install

This is a repeat of a query posted under a
different title. Maybe here it will get more
attention. And yes, I posted it in Tech Net.

I downloaded and installed SP3 about a week ago,
and have noticed only one peculiarity so far.
My screen saver times in and functions, but even
with nothing of mine that I know of running, I
see no disk shutoff, no Standby, No Hibernate.
Nothing different in my operating procedures....
before SP2 I could count on it hibernating.

Anybody else seen this failure of Power Options?

I replied to someone recently about a problem like yours. With Windows Me,
Hibernate worked but Stand By did not. After going to XP with SP 2 Stand By
functioned but Hibernate did not. Upgrade to SP 3 made absolutely no
difference.

I decided to live with it.

Thanks for the report of your experiences, Ken. I found
in XP Home/SP2 that it was entirely reliable and repeatable.
I never used it in the older systems. Immediately after
installing SP3 last week, Hibernate did work, but not
repeatably. Now it *never* works. Maybe somebody will agree
that it needs fixing....somebody who can and will.

THE SOLUTION!!!!
I contacted HP Tech Support and they gave me the solution.
They didn't say it was SP2/SP3 related, but told me how to
fix it. It's in two parts:
1. Delete the network driver in Device Manager, and reboot,
at which time it will reinstall the driver.
2. There's a hidden place I hadn't seen before, buried in
Power Options. I had to UNcheck where it allows network
activity to prevent Power Options from going into Standby
or Hibernate.

Now it works right every time. Pass this along to anybody
you hear of, who reports the same problem. Note that, until
I installed SP3, it was working fine...............
