Unable to hibernate

When I try and use hibernate I get the message that windows is preparing to
hibernate but then nothing happens. The hard disk stops writing data but
the screen continues to show the message and the power stays on.

I have SP3 and all latest updates. 4Gb of RAM of which 1.7Gb is set up as a
RAM disk and 3.3Gb total is visible to Windows. The hibernate files on disk
is the same size as the visible RAM (ie 3.3Gb). Standby works fine if that
is relevant.

Any ideas how to troubleshoot this problem? I presume something is refusing
to shut down but how do I find out what is causing the blockage?

I had already visited most of the links that search gave. None solve my
problem. Note I do not get any error message - the computer just hangs with
the 'preparing to hibernate' message on the screen. Also, unlike most
others, I can put it in standby with no problem.

Never tried it on this computer before. It's a desktop about 3 years old
and getting slow to boot so I thought this was a way to speed up the start
process.

I have done everything to try and speed it up such as defrag, registry
cleanup, uninstall unused software, closing/deleting network links, deleting
temp files etc....

I have a similar issue. It hangs up on "Preparing to standby." The only way
to re-boot is to pull the power.

In Power Management it will not allow me to enter a computer as the
administrator. It is greyed out. And it will not allow power settings options.
