Hibernation after reboot

I have an acer desktop that suddenly has started going into hibernation about
30 seconds or so after a reboot. If I wake it up, it goes into hibernation
again. I can boot into safe mode and it does not do this. The only thing
changed recently was I hooked it up to a dsl modem from ATT and the cd which
came with it said something about installing a virtual machine. I may be
wrong but it seems this problem started right after that upon the first
reboot.
I also have no hibernation tab in power settings. Is there a registry entry
I can change manually to prvent this as I have no restore points.

More info--
I gave up on that computer and got another one that was booting fine. I
forgot to say I had also installed a new HP1022 printer. This time, I did
not install any dsl software, just the ptinter--then I rebooted and this
second computer is now doing the same thing. HP says it's impossible, of
course.
Other weird things--on the second computer, before doing anything, I created
a system checkpoint and saw it there as a selection. After this weird thing
happened, there are no checkpoints and I can not even click on a prior date
to see if any checkpoints are there. Can't believe just installing a printer
did all this but it happened twice.

I have a HP printer and many of my friends do. None of us have any problems
with it and or DSL.
What OS are you using and is your printer driver compatible with it?
Any virus programs?

Hi Dave...

Update your chipset drivers which usually gets you the hibernate and
drop downs in power options to appear again.
Typically on a new computer, if the hibernate tab is not available, it
usually means your computer doesn't support hibernation. But if you had
this options and it now has disappeared, follow the advice above and
then set your power scheme options as stated below.

You can also Google for tips on why your hibernation tab has disappeared
as well if these other tips don't help.

Check your Power Options in Control Panel.
Control Panel, Performance and Maintenance, Power Options.
On the Power Schemes Tab, be sure you have Portable/Laptop selected at
the top by clicking the arrow under Power Schemes.

Then at the bottom:
Turn Off Monitor - Never
Turn Off Hard Disks - After 2 Hours
System Standby - Select, Never

Apply and Ok.
