Failure to Boot

I have developed a problem on my laptop! Windows begins
to stat up, but doesn't get as far as the log-on screen.
It halts and nothing seems to get it going.
I've tried:
Resetting the laptop - no change
E-diagnostics - apparently all is OK but still won't boot
Re-setting the BIOS defaults - no change

I can't get into windows to actually do anything there, so
I am limited to these things.

Can anyone help? I am reluctant to run the recovery CD as
I don't want to loose the Hard Drive contents!!!

Well, have you tried to start with the "last good known configuration" ?
