I had the same problem. Here is how I worked round it. I removed Dender
via Control Panel>Remove Programs. Shut down Windows completely - not
Restart. Then downloaded and reinstalled Dender from website. Then got
message that Defender had not been updated for 25 days. The Signature
reference in "About" had gone from 1.13.1272.4 to 1.0.0.0. Then found
Article 915105 and followed instructions there. It worked !! Signature now
1.13.1276.3 in "About". I use XP Home so that may be the bug. Hope it works
for you.

tried it and it did not work for me - perhaps MS has pulled all updates from
the server? MS update doesn't find anything either.

Hi Herb

I had download problem + this fixed it for me.

In your start menu go to run type services.msc hit enter, when services
window opens scroll down list + look for background intelligent service,
right click on it + click properties, then make sure startup type on the
general tab shows automatic + also that service status shows started if not
click start service and click apply or ok when done. Now go to windows
update + try to down load updates.

Glen - tried it but no banana! Still wouldn't find / dowload update. Went
to MS update and it also still does not find a valid update. Defender is at
1.0.0.0 file level.

This is definitely not the case.--the updates are available. It seems as
though Windows Update is not recognizing that Windows Defender is installed.

Is there any error message or discription for the failure? Do you have the
Windows Installer 3.1 installed? (You can see this near the end of the list
in add or remove programs.)

Guess what? AFter all the approaches suggested did nit work, I tried a
stupid approach - I simply reinstalled the program over the existing one and
it worked! I was immediately in receipt of the updted defender sig file.
Don't know why this worked, but it did.

That's good! It'd be even nicer to know why, but maybe we can leave that
for wiser folks...

Guess what? Today there is a new update available and it keeps "installing"
whenm I hit the yellow icon in the tray - keeps installing, again and again!
SO I did the MS update routine and it came up again as needed (after 6
so-called successful "installs") Now what is the problem? DO I need to
reboot after every update to let it be registered as installed?

Bill Sanderson

No reboot should be needed, although the home page of the product may not
show the version correctly until you close and reopen it.
