Failiure to shutdown

My pc is about 4 years old running XP home, sp2 but on many occasions it
fails to shut down and i have to use the power off button.
Is this a problem that can be cured or is it a symptom of my pc getting
tired and a common problem.

I hope that makes sense

It isn't a symptom of your computer "getting tired" but it is a fairly
common problem. Something that is running is refusing to shut down
gracefully. Most often that is malware, although other programs can be
difficult too.

First make sure that the computer is completely virus/malware-free:

Once you know the system is clean, if you still experience the problem
