Failing to add additional domain controller to domain

Hi all,

I am having a Windows 2000 domain controller having ADS
and DNS configured. When I add another server and wanted
it to join the domain and also to be a domain
controller. Its not succeding.
I am able to make it join the domain just fine, but having
problem getting it to be a backup domain controller.
I run DCPROMO and I tell it that its an "Additional
Controller for an Existing Domain".
I click next and it prompts me for the username and
password info, which I enter just fine. It then asks me
for the Full DNS Name of the existing domain, and it has
xyzcorp.com already filled in;if I hit the browse button,
it also shows xyz.com. If I click next, it tells
me "The domain "xyzcorp.com" cannot be contacted. Select
a different domain. If I take the .com out, it says "The
domain "xyz" refers to the domain "xyzcorp.com". Is that
what you intended? If I click YES, it then
prompts me for the directory info like one would expect.
It then goes through and starts the whole AD join process
for about 5 seconds and then says "The operation failed
because: Failed finding a suitable domain
controller for the domain xyz.com. "The specified domain
name either doesn't exist or could not be contacted"."

I have the IP address of the existing domain server as the
DNS server of the new server. I've even tried setting the
gateway address of the new server to the IP address of the
existing DC. It IS part of the domain, I have also hard-
coded the IP address in the HOSTS and
LMHOST files. I can ping the name of the server and the
domain name with no problems.

Does any one knows where I could be wrong?
Please help me out..

Thanks,

Vinojo Francis

Check that the SRV records are present on the DNS server, and also make sure that the hopefull-DC is set to register it's address in DNS. Also make sure that the DNS server points to itself for DNS resolution. If the SRV records are not on the Primary DNS server, ensure the DHCP client service is running and restart the netlogon service

I assume you are using either the enterprise or domain administrator account, or an account with administrative priveledges over the domain?
