Hi All,

I am having windows 2000 domain with single domain controller. I have
configured dns server on domain controller. Now I want to add additional
domain controller in same domain. Is it required to configure dns server on
additional domain controller.

Plz suggest.

Thanx

Hi,

Well it is not required to have DNS on the second DC, but I surely
would have DNS running on all domain controllers.
I point all domain controllers to the PDC emulator for primary DNS and
themselfs for secondary DNS.
I configure it as Active Directory Integrated to utilize AD
replication.
I then make sure I have the clients point to the closest DNS server for
primary and the second closest as secondary.

Good luck

Before you set up DNS on the second DC, make sure that DNS on the first
one is integrated. That way, once you install DNS on the second DC, it
will automatically copy the DNS structure from the first one.

BTW, it's not mandatory, but very important. You need to consider what
happens if the first DC goes off line. If you don't have DNS on the
second DC (and make it a GC), no one will be able to log on or resolve
any named addresses....

If you end up having two dns servers make sure the clients point to both,
otherwise if one goes down the clients won;t know about the other.
