failed to complete installation message

Hi,

I've tried to download Microsoft's new flight simulator trial of FSX. It's
over 600 mbs and requires 15gbs of hard drive space which I don't have on C.
So I put it in D, a drive with over 100gbs of space which contains much data
but also one application - the earlier simulator FS2004.
The download appeared to go smoothly although during installation there was
there was a pause half way through the "Installing DirectX 9.0C - computing
space required" stage (although there appeared to be a great deal of hard
drive activity taking place).

Finally installation is stated to be complete but underneath this a message
a box shows up stating " 1628 failed to complete installation". When the
app icon is clicked the screen flickers but the app is not launched.

Is there a solution to this?

I noticed also that the app does not show up in the add/remove list and
there does not appear to be an uninstall function in the folder.

Any advice and help appreciated?

You can try using System Restore, putting your system back to any date prior
to the day your attempted download.

What do you expect - this is demoware, not much better than betaware.
I hope you are using a test computer to run this FSX.
In any case, you would be better served by posting in the correct group.
This problem of yours is not XP connected - try microsoft.public.simulators
newsgroup - there is much discussion re this beta/demo/trial/test rubbish.

Well the message would seem to be XP rather than FSX related. And although
there IS much discussion about FSX on the other group as you mention, the
fact is that many people do seem actually to have downloaded AND to have got
the thing running. I haven't; it did go onto an XP OS on a PC with
sufficient grunt to handle it and with the necessary space; I'd like to know
why.

So the question remains; what could have caused the error message I have
received, what does the particular message I refer to mean, and is there a
way can get this app up and running?

Comments - of the constructive variety - welcomed. Others not required.

I do not put betaware on my 'only' computer - I like to keep it operating
for long periods of time.
I am not a tester either, nor an expert in XP.
You say you have looked - those discussing are in the top 20 of experts in
simulators(FS).
But you have not put your Q to the group.
Simulator Q's rarely get any response in here in 'general'.
There are a number of things I would try myself, in your position, but I
would not suggest them to you as I am not aware of what the consequences
would be - and you do not appear to be using a test system for this demo.
Hence the lack of 'constructive' comment you want.
You have posted in simulators - so why not this time? Even a cross-post
with your thread might have covered all angles.

PS
Did you try the System Restore suggestion?

The only relevance to Windows XP is the reason why the install
failed. And it was pretty obvious. Just how much space do you
have left on Drive C? IOW, if Microsoft says 15 GB on Drive C,
then it really meant 15 GB on Drive C unless you know how to
re-write the demo's installation file. Understand the fact that
Microsoft's programmers know of only one hard drive partition
and that is Drive C unless the program has custom installation
to allow the user to select a different location. And although
the installation was "complete", its final copying to the HD
was probably aborted due to insufficient HD space, taking into
account the overhead demanded of Drive C

Hi G.H.
I cant see that this 50 minute demo requires 15GB HHD.
The download demo is 636MB.
The finished version is 14GB HHD.
Have I missed something - I can find nothing in relation to this demo that
says anything about system requirements.

Who knows what garbage Microsoft is putting into the demo or
the game that Microsoft is playing. All I can think of is that
there might be a lot of video overlays and 14GB is not quite
the size of a 2-disc DVD set. There could be a missing decimal
point...like 1.4 GB or 1.5 GB.

The figures I quoted are from the MS site.
I agree with the garbage bit :)

Buy a new C: drive with the space you need for new apps.
