Failed installation

My computer stopped playing cd's and system sounds - no
change to the hardware, connections, etc. The speakers do
produce notes from some sort of piano type program

I downloaded the latest "Creative multimedia software"
update. The download went fine. The installation ran for
hours and finally failed.

The Windows Update search no longer lists that one - it
must see the download on my computer. How can I redo the
download and installation?

Lee, do a System Restore to a time previous to the Installation.

Open system properties/hardware/device manager, click to

select your sound card device, remove it, re-boot, and
then go to either the maker of your PC or the manufacturer
of the sound card to find, download, and install the
correct sound driver. You may need to run the update
driver from inside the device manager after running the
driver file setup which you downloaded. Also close, exit,
and/ or disable all other running programs prior to this,
and esp. any anti-virus app needs to have auto-protect set
to disabled.
