Fading Text, but not gone

I have received a set of slides to prepare the final presentation for. On
several of the slides, there are text boxes that together comprise a list.
The presenter wants to have the text in several of the boxes fade to an
almost transparent look (similar to a watermark) and the other list items
stay normal. This is their way of highlighting some of the items in the
list. I have tried to make the text box transparent, I have tried to place
something over the text and make it semi-transparent, but nothing seems to
work.

Is there a way to make text fade but not completely disappear?

The easy way would be to change it's color to a light grey.

I can think of two or three ways to do this, but which you'd use depends on
what version of PPT you're using.
