If that's what it tells you to do for your model, then that's what you need
to do. I would suggest holding down the CTRL key and tapping the F11 key as
the PC starts. If it doesn't work then you need to ask the question on the
Dell website.

Contact Dell.

Seriously - not being "sarcastic" - if it is a Dell computer and it is the
default Dell install - then they will have to help you restore it to its 'as
purchased' glory.

maybe if you have been
incurring some issues
that is inducing you to
do a factory restore, then
it may be simply a faulty
hard drive.

perhaps it is also the reason
why you may not be getting
access to its hidden partition
where the restore files are
stored.

When you see the blue bar across the top of the screen ( while booting
- only lasts 2 seconds ) press Ctrl and enter ; 2 options , continue
booting and factory specs .

It may just be a matter of timing. Try doing this a bit earlier, and hold
the Ctrl and F11 keys down a bit longer. Experiment with the timing.

It's either that, or you've inadvertently done some repartitioning on your
computer(?) - which can make the Dell System Restore (DSR) option not come
up.

At start up press f8 and tap. If this doesn't take you into restore then
reboot and press control/f11. Then it should say repair system hit enter.
Not all computers will allow you to restore this way. You may have to use
the original OS CD. The restore method is much faster though.

If there is a recovery partition on the laptop - and HP did install on
Pavillions - you should see a brief message as computer boots indicating
something like "Hit F11 to restore...".

Some users remove the recovery partition - if that is the case you can
purchase recovery media from Hp - cost usually about $15.

Maybe for a Dell laptop that message shows, but not for a Dell Desktop.
You have to *know* how to invoke it before it boots up, otherwise there is
no message. IOW, if you don't press Ctrl-F11 before it gets booted, no
message will ever appear.

How did "Dell" get into this thread?

First, drop the Texting short-hand or learn to spell.
The amount of RAM recommended is a function of the Operating System. With Windows Vista, the
minimum RAM recommended is 2 Gigabytes (3 is better). With Windows XP 512 Megabytes is the minimum
RAM recommended and 1 Gigabyte is better. (The brand of RAM is not that important)
Be aware that all laptops use very proprietary parts and associated hardware drivers. As such, any
repairs in the future require you get your parts from that manufacture and repairs will be
expensive. Buy a 3 year extended warrantee with the laptop. Which brand laptop you buy really
doesn't matter they all have basically good products and a few lemons. Make sure the store you buy
from will stand behind the computer. Office Max wipes there hands of any responsibility as soon as
they have your money. (You have to deal with the pc manufacture even if you get a lemon that does
not work when you get it home.)

Posting from your iPhone?

No hard and fast rules - but just a basic I would suggest:

- If Windows XP and never plan to upgrade to another OS: 1GB
(* Unless you are doing heavy graphics/gaming - then 2GB.)
- If Windows Vista : 2GB to 3GB
- If a 64bit OS - I'd say get 4GB and just not worry about it.

As for what to look for in a laptop - what will you be doing with it?
