I read an article today in a newsletter which is not known for practical
jokes and it made me wonder. It stated that on April 12 <not April Fools
day>, SP would be required to be installed on all XP computers, like it or
not. It bluntly stated that SP would be installed.

Has anyone else have knowledge of this coming event?

I've been reading about that on a dell forum too, then i looked it up and
this is it:

"Beginning on Tuesday 12 April 2005 Automatic Updates and Windows Update
will deliver SP2 regardless of the presence of the blocking mechanism,". The
company has scheduled a monthly security update on 12 April."

the only thing you can do if you want to keep SP2 out is to disable
automatic update and make the updates manually, if you administer a
network, is either create you own update bundles or just accept sp2, but if
you do accept sp2, better make sure that it's on your hole network, or
you'll have really nasty problems.

The OP neglected to mention he was referring to mandatory update for SP2,
which will be the case for automatic updates.

Re SP1:

From the Windows Update site:

"Windows XP support on Windows Update will soon require XP SP1 or later"

...as WinXP will soon end it's lifecycle.

If they do not make it clear, they are practicing bad journalism.

Gerry;
That is a good example of BAD journalism.
You need to read half the article then go to a Microsoft link and read
carefully to finally determine this does not apply to many.
That is a good way to waste peoples time.
Also many will stop after the first paragraph.

However many are reading that FUD thinking they have no choice when in
reality nothing has changed.
If the USER installed that tool, then SP-2 was delayed even with Automatic
Update enabled.
If that tool was not installed, SP-2 was installed if Automatic Update was
enabled.
If Automatic Update is off, you will not get SP-2 or any other update
regardless if the tool is used.
