Since I don't know what "tried nearly everything" entails, here are
basic questions:

1. What is the virus/malware status of the computer? If you think it is
clean, what did you use to determine this? Names and versions of
antivirus and antimalware programs, as well as whether your av
subscription is active and definitions are updated.

2. What is the download that keeps repeating? Are you using a
third-party download manager and if so, which one?

3. Are you able to run msconfig and cmd? If not, this indicates probable
virus infection.

Post back with requested details for more focused help.

I had /have one computer that ctrl+alt+del didn't work for the task manager
...and never did get back to find out why (i did look for awhile)

if you right click on the menu bar at the bottom , can you select and run
task manager from there ?

Are you the sole user of the XP install? Try Ctrl, Alt ESC; that's the
proper way to bring up task manager with XP.

this is a common symptom of malware. get Adaware, SpyBot, and
CWShredder, reboot into safemode, install and test. with luck these will
fix it, but you may be so compromised that a complete rebuild is
necessary.

Sounds more like a F**king user that has decided to remain ignorant of pests
rather than eradicate them and use adequate protection.

Download MULTI_AV.EXE from the URL --
http://www.ik-cs.com/programs/virtools/Multi_AV.exe

To use this utility, perform the following...
Execute; Multi_AV.exe { Note: You must use the default folder C:\AV-CLS }
Choose; Unzip
Choose; Close

Execute; C:\AV-CLS\StartMenu.BAT
{ or Double-click on 'Start Menu' in C:\AV-CLS }

NOTE: You may have to disable your software FireWall or allow WGET.EXE to go through your
FireWall to allow it to download the needed AV vendor related files.

C:\AV-CLS\StartMenu.BAT -- { or Double-click on 'Start Menu' in C:\AV-CLS}
This will bring up the initial menu of choices and should be executed in Normal Mode.
This way all the components can be downloaded from each AV vendor's web site.
The choices are; Sophos, Trend, McAfee, Kaspersky, Exit this menu and Reboot the PC.

You can choose to go to each menu item and just download the needed files or you can
download the files and perform a scan in Normal Mode. Once you have downloaded the files
needed for each scanner you want to use, you should reboot the PC into Safe Mode [F8 key
during boot] and re-run the menu again and choose which scanner you want to run in Safe
Mode. It is suggested to run the scanners in both Safe Mode and Normal Mode.

When the menu is displayed hitting 'H' or 'h' will bring up a more comprehensive PDF help
file. http://www.ik-cs.com/multi-av.htm

The type of behavior you describe is typical behavior of more than
one virus/worm, the three below being the most common:

W32.Klez
http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/[email protected]

W32.Yaha
http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/[email protected]

W32.Spybot.Worm
http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/w32.spybot.worm.html

Because many of the newer viruses and worms, such as the Spybot
mentioned above, can disable antivirus applications whose definitions
aren't kept up-to-date, try using one or more of the free on-line
scanners to double-check your system.

hi,

Ctrl + Alt + Del doesnt work
right clicking on the menu bar and clicking task manager doesnt work
run taskmgr doesnt work
Ctrl + Shift + esc brings up a box saying this application is in use by
another program. i rebooted and tried jus Crtl + Shift + esc and still said
the same thing.
i have spybot, adware and CSshredder (all fully up dated) and they have
found nothing. Trendmicro pc-cillian 2002 has found nothing and is fully
updated. my laptop has done this before, but after wiping the HD to put linix
and then xp back on task man was back. are there any programs that will
search deeper than SP, AD aware and CS?
