Extracting Icons

I have a 1995 program that exchanges/replaces icons. They are embedded
in dll files. On my Vista machine, I can get at all of them except one
dll. Message says it contains no icons. Any way to get at them?

Fruit,

What is the DLL name?

PA Bear is right about not being a Vista group but there is no newsgroup to
answer your question

Around 2002, I wrote a program that rips icons from files. If you tell me
the DLL name I will use it to get to them but maybe there aren't any
embedded icons in that dll. If you replaced them then the virus scanners
would be going crazy as you are writing to those dll files & the scanners
won't like it

The name of the file is ihearres.dll. The icons are in there because I
still use the program (IconHear-It 1995) on my XP machine. The program
has other dll files where other icons reside - so I know the icons are
there. I've tried to "Change Icon" in properties. It works with the
other dll files - but not this one. Obviously, there are icons in
there that I really liked. The program also installs in my Vista
machine - except for thos particular icons.

Have you used your computer for anything yet? You seem to be obsessed
with icons.

If the program you wrote is called Icon Ripper, I have it. But it
seems that dll doesn't have any icons. I wonder if that dll file
points to some other file?

I didn't replace them. I just went to my XP machine and those icons
are in that dll file when I point to it to "Change Icon." However, I
placed ALL the files from IconHear-It in Icon Ripper and still can't
find those icons. I'm perplexed.

Wise comments aren't called for. What I do with my computer is MY
business. Why are you wasting your time writing silly comments like
the one above?

Because this isn't the first "icon" thread you've started.

ihearres.dll must point to something else to get at those icons. Is
there a way to find out? Is there a way to "read" the dll file?

"Change icon" is used to change the icon used *by* the file, not to extract
one.

The file has 400 icons. If you'll make a copy of the file and change the
extension to ".icl" (no quotes) you can use any icon program that will
handle icon libraries to open it and extract what you want.

Try it - it works! Change the path when you use "Change Icon" to other
files and you'll see it works. Usually, the executable will render the
primary icon of the program. DLL's are usually loaded with icons.

I know you can change the path. Doing so gives you access to other files
and allows you to select an icon from them for use by whatever you are
changing but it does not extract the icon for general use.

I know that too.

Sometimes they are, sometimes they aren't. Depends on what the library file
is for.

Guess I don't understand your point. I've used icons from one program
in another program or to change an icon on my desktop that I like
better many times. I know "Change Icon" doesn't permanently extract an
icon for general use - but it does the job (usually) when I want it to.
This is the only time it hasn't worked. In fact, it still works with
the dll I'm having trouble with on my XP machine. It's only on the
Vista machine that it isn't working. Strange - but that same program
has other dll files and "Change Icon" works with all of them. It's
behaving incongruously. Thanks.

So extract it as I suggested in my first reply.

For some reason, on the Vista machine, no icons appear to be in that
dll file. However, they are there when I do the same thing on the XP
Pro machine. Icon Ripper finds them and "Change Icon" does too.

1. Extract on XP machine with Icon Ripper

2. Use on Vista machine.

Downloaded version 2.0 and it won't install on my XP machine. Seems I
don't have the original IconRipper on that machine anymore. Can you
help?

Sure. There are many, many icon editors, try these...
