extracting files from DOS or windows recovery

Computers not working
can only get to windows recovery
need to get files off computer before I erase it all and start again
how can this be done threough dos
can I send files to a usb port and memory stick
are there cd writing programs that work in dos
please help

There is no DOS in XP. If your XP partition was formatted in NTFS, DOS
wouldn't be able to see it anyway. The easiest thing to do is slave the
hard drive in a working XP machine that has a cd-rw and copy the data
files off. Then put the drive back in the original machine and do the
format/install Windows thing. If you don't have a second computer, then
maybe a friend's will work, or you can take yours to a good local
computer repair shop (not a Best Buy or CompUSA type of store).
