Hi Friends,
I have Windows XP professional OS in my system. And I
do have a Maxtor 40GB HDD.
Now I selected all files on my C:\ drive and look at
the properties. It shows that 3.07 GB is occupied. But
when I see in the My Computer it shows that 5 GB has been
occupied.
Can anyone tell me what is the reason for this
difference ?

Windows has to be able to "address" all of the disk. For drives over 2GB,
the drive is split into 'clusters' each of 4kB. Each file occupies an
integer
number if clusters
E.g.
A File of Size takes up Space on the disk.
1kb 4kb
3.9kb 4kb
4.1kb 8kb
:
19.9kb 20kb
20.1kb 24kb
23.9kb 24kb
:
800kb 800kb
800.5kb 804kb and so on!

When you select all the files, you see the sum of the LEFT column,
When you look at the Disk, you see the sum of the RIGHT column!

Hope this helps!

have Folder Options - View set to show Hidden files, and *not* Hide
Protected mode ones and look again

There will be something like 1GB of files in C:\Windows that did not
show, and the whole folder System Volume Information containing restore
points
