extra keystokes automatically appear in password boxes

Hi, I'm having an intermittent problem where additional
keystrokes automatically appear whilst typing something
into a password box.

It also happens at all times when typing in my password
into the initial windows login screen, and during logging
back in.

It also happens with other password protected applications.

I am using Windows XP Home, and a usb keyboard, any help
would be greatly appreciated.

Hi

Only when entering passwords? Have you tried another keyboard to see if
there is a problem with one you are using now?

If you are meaning Dialup boxes, etc. this is normal. XP sets these
passwords to 16 characters by default. It is for security measures.

As for your 'always' happens via the login screen, this is not normal nor
common. Are you sure this is correct?

For any other added info elsewhere, this has to do with the mic being on if
you have Text to Speech activated.

Yeah I know its rather odd but it is the case,

Speech is deactivated and there is no mic plugged in.

Also I tried another USB keyboard and the same problem,
I reloaded the keyboard drives, and the USB drivers...

And yup.. The same problem..

bizarre I know, but it still happens always on login to
XP, and intermittently on other password protected apps

for example with my lotus notes R6.. the icons that denote
a keypress go into a flutter when i am prompted for a
password, and that is before i even type anything.

Is it possible that there is some sort of screwy keylogger or prank
software running?

Might be worth looking at what processes are running
