extra header text in document map

I have a document with headers using heading styles. When in document map I
see extra number/letters that are not a part of the header text. e.g., 1
Background becomes 11BBackground. If the cursor is placed immediately in
front of the header text in the actual document (not the heading number) the
cursor is very tiny (instead of 14 pt) and the font style is 1pt ZWAdobeF
instead of 14 Arial. The only way I can get rid of it is to index back until
the heading number highlights, index 1 space forward and then hit the delete
key until the cursor becomes the appropriate size. Does anyone know how what
causes this in the first place? It's a real problem for me because all of
those extra characters get included into Adobe bookmarks when I pdf the
document.
Thanks,
LAC

Select the paragraphs and press Ctrl+SpaceBar to clear the direct
formatting. You will then be able to see (and delete) the excessive text.

The issue you are describing has come up before, a few weeks back. I don't
know what causes it. Are you running som sort of add-in with Word?

I am using a document template with unique toolbar buttons but I have created
several other documents using the same template and this hasn't happened. It
also happened once before about a year ago before I had the document
templates. Thanks for a MUCH easier way to get rid of it if it happens again
and for the quick response.
