XP on my desktop will not communicate with my new external drive. Explorer
assigns it a letter, device manger says it is working normally but disk
manager does not show it and explorer cannot read its files or write to it, I
just get an error message that the path cannot be found. Any ideas please?

Does the drive work on other computers?
Does other USB drives work on the computer in question?

Yes to both, the external drive works perfectly on my laptop, and usb
peripherals like printer, scanner and flash drive work fine on the desktop.

Sometimes drive are just not compatible with some USB controllers.
Having additional USB ports on a PCI card is helpful in such cases...

Have you installed the latest drivers for your motherboard or
chipset?
