External USB Drive won't work

Hi All
I have just tried to connect a ext hard drive to my USB Port (shintaro case
Seagate 160 GB drive, I have an internal 120GB SATA drive, when I plugged the
ext drive in it said "found new hardware" etc, then it said "had problem your
new hardware may not work", it doesn't, can anyone help.
